Haylage

Definition

Haylage is the forage of alfalfa and grasslands that is cultivated like dry clover but the bundling is done with higher humidity. Afterwards, the packages are wrapped with multiple layers of polyethylene to exclude all the air, in which a natural fermentation process is created in order to maintain the grass and nutritional elements. The result is a dust-free and extremely palatable fodder.

Characteristics
  • It has higher moisture content than the hay (dry clover) but less than silage's.
  • It is free of dust.
  • Provides higher levels of digestible fibers, energy and proteins.
  • Can be stored outdoors.

Feeding

Haylage is an excellent food for horses and ruminants.
